Surprising Woollen Spinning
Questa volta il bellissimo percorso che stiamo vivendo ci ha permesso di attraversare un’esperienza che, in prima persona, ci ha consentito di osservare cosa sia e come avvenga il processo di filatura cardata all’interno delle aziende biellesi che ci hanno ospitati.
Il ciclo di filatura cardato a differenza di quello pettinato, prevede l’utilizzo esclusivamente di fibre corte provenienti da fibre vergini, da cascami di altre lavorazioni o da stracci riciclati.
Questo processo prevede che i fiocchi di origine e colore diversi vengano mescolati per ottenere un’infinita possibilità di composizioni cromatiche, successivamente cardati attraverso grandi macchine dette carde, composte da cilindri rotanti guarniti con denti ed infine trasformati in stoppini avvolti su cannelle.
Per conferire la resistenza necessaria alle successive lavorazioni e all’uso, gli stoppini devono essere trasformati in filato, applicando stiro e torsione su filatoi ad anello tradizionali o sui filatoi self-acting, ancora utilizzati da alcune aziende per la produzioni dei filati più pregiati, solitamente in mischia con cashmere, angora o altre fibre nobili.
Il filato che si ricava da questa operazioni è morbido, caldo e voluminoso ed è affascinante come questo processo possa valorizzare al meglio le proprietà della lana, anche partendo da scarti provenienti da tutta la filiera tessile. La circolarità del processo dona a questo prodotto un grande valore aggiunto, quello di essere intrinsecamente sostenibile.
Questa esperienza ha aggiunto alla nostra formazione un tassello fondamentale per una più profonda comprensione di quelle che sono le qualità delle fibre nobili, in particolarmente valorizzate dal ciclo di lavorazione cardato.
Ringraziamo quindi le aziende che ci hanno gentilmente ospitato e mostrato il fascino della trasformazione che avviene in questa tipologia di filatura, un momento formativo che ci ha arricchito e permesso di essere coinvolti in un’esperienza di rara bellezza e ancora più consapevoli di quanto per noi sia stata una fortuna unica quella di vivere queste opportunità.

This time the beautiful path we are living has allowed us to go through an experience that has allowed us to observe what is and how the woolen spinning process takes place within the Biella-based companies that hosted us.
The woolen spinning cycle, unlike the worsted one, requires the use of only short fibres coming from virgin fibers and waste from other processes or recycled rags.
This process requires that the flakes of different origin and colour are mixed to obtain thousands of possibilities of chromatic compositions, later woolen through larges machines called cardboards, composed of rotating cylinders with teeth, and finally transformed into wicks wrapped on cinnamon.
In order to give the necessary strength to subsequent processing and use, the wicks must be turned into yarn by ironing and twisting on traditional ring spinning machines or on self spinning machine, still used by some companies for the production of the finest yarns, usually mixed with cashmere, angora or other noble fibers.
The yarn that is obtained from this process is soft, warm and voluminous and it is fascinating how this process can best enhance the properties of the wool, even starting from scraps from all the textile industry. The circularity of the process gives this product a great added value that is being inherently sustainable.
This experience has added to our training a fundamental dowel for a deeper understanding of what are the qualities of the noble fibers, particularly enhanced by the woolen processing cycle.
