Il distretto tessile biellese è situato nella zona del Piemonte nord– orientale e costituisce uno dei maggiori centri mondiali dell’industria tessile/laniera.
Perché in questo territorio si è sviluppato questo tipo di industria?
Le cause sono principalmente da ricercare nelle caratteristiche geografiche di questo luogo.
In particolare la presenza di abbondante acqua avente bassa durezza totale facilita molte operazioni industriali di fondamentale importanza come il lavaggio, il finissaggio e la tintoria. Da non sottovalutare la innata intraprendenza degli abitanti e la passione per la lana, considerato anche che l’orografia del territorio ha favorito inizialmente lo sviluppo dell’allevamento degli ovini.
Quest’area ha avuto fortune alterne ed ha vissuto periodi molto prosperi ed altri meno.
Gli anni Sessanta sono stati un periodo difficile per l’economia biellese a causa della crisi del modello a ciclo completo e dell’alluvione del 1968. L’introduzione di nuove tecnologie e nuovi sistemi organizzativi, hanno permesso un’ottima ripresa del distretto negli anni Settanta.
Per rimanere competitivi a livello globale, attualmente, oltre alla tradizionale lavorazione della lana, si affianca la produzione di filati e tessuti di alta qualità in cashmere, pelo di cammello, alpaca, vigogna, mohair. Il filato è destinato alla maglieria di lusso, il tessuto alla confezione di abbigliamento maschile e femminile di alta sartoria di assoluta eccellenza.

The industrial textile district of Biella is situated in the north-west side of Piedmont and it is one of the most important area for the wool/textile industry.
Why is Biella a leader in the textile industry?
It is first because of the geographical characteristic of this region. The presence of large quantities of quality water suits perfectly the production of wool, especially during the operations of washing, drying and finishing. The entrepreneurship spirit of the local population and their passion for wool were crucial to promote the development of this area. Moreover, the orography of the area promotes the livestock of sheep which produces yarns and fabrics. All these things combine permitted the development of this region.
Biella had changing fortune during the years.
The 60’s were complicated years for the Biella’s economy due to the crisis of the industrial model and the flood of 1968. The introduction of new technologies and new strategies for the industry allowed an important recovery during the 70s.
Nowadays, in order to stay competitive, Biella has expanded his traditional production to high quality yarn and fabric made of cashmere, camel, alpaca, vicuna and mohair. The goods produced with these fibres are used to produced high quality and luxury clothes.
