Il nostro viaggio intorno al mondo del tessile ci ha portati alla fine di agosto a vivere tre giorni con Woolmark e AWI alla scoperta della lana merino.
Durante la prima giornata siamo stati guidati attraverso le centinaia di box di lana pronti per essere ispezionati prima delle aste. Così abbiamo capito come riuscire a osservare in modo attento e approfondito un campione di lana, comprendendo quanto questo sia anche un lavoro complicato che richiede anni di esperienza. Dopodiché abbiamo avuto la possibilità di assistere ad un’asta a Yennora, presso Australian Wool Exchange Limited. L’impatto è stato decisamente inaspettato: le voci, il ritmo, il valore della lana, vedere con i nostri occhi come vengono battute le balle ci ha permesso di comprendere meglio i meccanismi di vendita di questa pregiata fibra.
Nello stesso giorno ci siamo spostati alla fattoria di Markdale, dove il giorno seguente siamo stati accompagnati dal manager in un piccolo tour dello sheering shed e di alcune zone della farm. Così abbiamo scoperto come vengono gestite le pecore e i loro spostamenti, la conduzione sostenibile del loro prodotto e come si svolge lo sheering.
Il terzo giorno siamo tornati a Sydney per poter visitare gli uffici di Woolmark e AWI, dove ci è stata data la possibilità di incontrare diversi dipartimenti dell’azienda. Abbiamo così scoperto le problematiche australiane riguardo all’allevamento delle pecore merino, i progetti di sostenibilità in opera, il modo in cui viene gestito l’aspetto comunicativo e le innovazioni di prodotto che sono state create per valorizzare ancora di più questa fibra nobile.

Our journey around the world of textile we are embarking on will lead us to many countries to discover and study the best fibers. Especially, where do they come from, how they are best processed and how you can always better improve their qualities and performances. As part of our trip, we had the chance to live three unforgettable days with Woolmark company and Australian Wool Innovation, discovering every secret of Australian merino wool. The first day we have been invited to our fist wool auction in Yennora, at the Australian Wool Exchange Limited. We were guided through the hundreds of wool boxes filled with different samples ready to be inspected before auctions. Thus, we understood how to look carefully and thoroughly at a wool sample, this is a complicated job that requires years of experience. Then we had the chance to attend (and even participate, with fun results) to a real live auction. The impact was decidedly unexpected: the voices, the rhythm, the value of wool, seeing with our eyes how wool bales are beaten allowed us to better understand the sales mechanisms of this precious fiber. On the same day, we moved to Markdale farm, where the next day we were guided by the manager on a small tour of the shearing shed and some other areas of the farm. Thus, we realized the importance of sheep welfare to obtain the best quality wool. On the third day, we returned to Sydney to visit the offices of Woolmark and AWI. Here we were introduced to various departments of the company, thus having an all-round look at the whole vision and mission of the company. Here, the issues regarding the breeding of merino sheep, the sustainability projects in operation have been discussed. We have also been introduced to the different ranges of product innovations that have been created to further enhance this noble fiber.
