Cashmere: natural beauty!

È primavera e in uno dei luoghi più impervi del nostro pianeta, l’altopiano dell’Alashan nel deserto del Gobi, gli allevatori si preparano per la tosa. In quest’area vasta, arida e silenziosa, a cavallo tra Mongolia e Cina, le temperature sfiorano i -40°C in pieno inverno e oltre i 50°C in estate; le escursioni termiche annue e giornaliere sono altissime, il cibo scarseggia e le condizioni di vita sono davvero difficili.

Nonostante ciò, grazie al prezioso manto che assicura loro calore e protezione le capre Hircus riescono a sopravvivere. Al di sotto del pelo esterno, bianco e grossolano che protegge questi animali dalle intemperie, si nasconde un gioiello raro, il cashmere, un sottopelo che durante i freddi inverni protegge l’animale dalle rigide condizioni ambientali in cui vive. Gonfia e soffice, questa fibra incorpora il principio cardine dell’evoluzione; infatti proprio grazie alla sua struttura, calda e termoisolante, frutto di secoli di selezione naturale, questi animali riescono a vivere in condizioni estreme. Con una finezza di circa 14,5 micron, il cashmere lascia un piacevole ricordo sulle mani: la sua morbidezza, unica e rara, le avvolge in un inconfondibile sensazione di gradevolezza.

Durante la tosa il pastore, tagliato il pelo esterno pettina l’animale con attenzione e cura per prelevare il soffice sottopelo che le capre in ogni caso perderebbero con l’arrivo della stagione più mite. Da ogni animale si ottengono poco più di 250 grammi di fiocco grezzo che dopo l’eliminazione delle giarre, peli più lunghi e rigidi, si ridurranno a circa 150 grammi pronti per essere trasformati in un capo di ineguagliabile pregio.

Le balle contenenti il cashmere più prezioso arrivano in Italia e dopo rigorosi controlli vengono aperte e miscelate. Sotto forma di fiocco le fibre passano alla cardatura ed alle successive lavorazioni di preparazione alla filatura dove diventano morbidi stoppini che vengono poi ulteriormente stirati e torti. Il filato così ottenuto potrà essere destinato alla fabbricazione di soffici e calde maglie oppure alla creazione del tessuto a fili ortogonali, trama e ordito. Il successivo processo di finissaggio risveglierà la bellezza sopita del tessuto grezzo. Il risultato sarà una pezza custode delle proprietà che la natura ha donato alle capre Hircus che trasporta in sé l’unicità della materia prima, arricchendosi della passione delle numerose persone che l’hanno trattata.

Il cashmere lavorato in Italia è unico, e tali sono i prodotti che con esso si realizzano, risultato di una doppia rigorosa selezione: prima quella della natura che ha lasciato nel DNA di questi animali la chiave della bellezza, poi quella dell’artigianato italiano che ha saputo esaltarla plasmandola in una nuova forma, quella di tessuti durevoli che si trasformeranno in capi finiti senza tempo, rappresentazione onorevole del Made in Italy nel mondo. Indossando un capospalla di questa straordinaria fibra, si ricorda toccandolo la storia di questo ammirabile esemplare che possiede, nascosta nel suo prezioso sottopelo, una meraviglia della natura!

It is spring and in one of the most impervious places of our planet, the Alashan plateau in the Gobi desert, the breeders prepare themselves for the shearing. In this vast, arid and silent area, straddling Mongolia and China, temperatures reach -40°C in the middle of winter and over 50°C in summer; the annual and daily temperature ranges are very high, food is scarce and living conditions are really difficult.

Nevertheless, thanks to the precious mantle that ensures their warmth and protection, the Hircus goats are able to survive. Below the outer hair, white and coarse protecting these animals from the bad weather, it is hidden a rare jewel, the cashmere, a down hair that during the cold winters protects the animal from the rigid environmental conditions in which it lives. Puffy and fluffy, this fiber incorporates the pivotal principle of evolution; in fact, thanks to its structure, warm and insulating, the result of centuries of natural selection, these animals are able to live in conditions extreme. With a finesse of about 14.5 microns, cashmere leaves a pleasant memory on the hands: its softness, unique and rare, envelops them in an unmistakable sensation of pleasure.

During the shearing the shepherd, trimmed the outer hair, combs the animal carefully to take the soft undercoat that the goats in any case would lose with the arrival of the milder season. From each animal, a little more than 250 grams of raw staple are obtained, which after the removal of the jars, longer and stiffer hairs, will reduce to about 150 grams ready to be transformed into a garment of unparalleled value.

The bales containing the most precious cashmere arrive in Italy and after rigorous checks are opened and mixed. In the form of a staple the fibers pass to the woolen and to the subsequent processing of preparation to the spinning where they become soft rove which are then further stretched and twisted. The yarn thus obtained can be used for the manufacture of soft and warm knitwear or for the creation of the fabric with orthogonal threads, weft and warp. The subsequent finishing process will awaken the hidden beauty of the raw fabric. The result will be a custodian piece of property that nature has given to the hircus goats that carries in itself the uniqueness of the raw material, enriching the passion of the many people who treated it.

The cashmere processed in Italy is unique, and so are the products that are made with it, result of a double rigorous selection: first the nature that left in the DNA of these animals the key to beauty, then the Italian craftsmanship that has been able to exalt it in a new form, the one of durable fabrics that will turn into timeless finished garments, an honorable representation of the “Made in Italy” in the world. Wearing an outerwear of this extraordinary fiber, you remember touching the story of this admirable specimen that has, hidden in its precious undercoat, a wonder of nature!
