I masterini sono giunti quasi al termine del meraviglioso percorso del master, ma prima di iniziare il field project hanno preso un ultimo volo verso l’Inghilterra, alla scoperta di un famoso maglificio che ancora oggi serve la famiglia reale inglese.

John Smedley è un marchio storico dell'industria tessile britannica, fondato nel 1784 durante la rivoluzione industriale nella fabbrica di Lea Mills, nel Derbyshire, dove tutt'oggi ha sede dopo oltre 230 anni. Nata come produttrice di mussola e filati di cotone, l'azienda si è rapidamente evoluta, lanciando nel 1825 i famosi "Long Johns" grazie all'introduzione di una delle prime macchine per maglieria. Da allora, John Smedley ha costruito una reputazione globale per la qualità e lo stile dei suoi prodotti, esportandoli in tutto il mondo sin dal 1914.

Nel corso del XX secolo, il marchio è diventato un'icona di eleganza britannica, amato da celebrità come Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn e i Beatles, e collaborando con rinomati stilisti come Vivienne Westwood e Paul Smith negli anni ’80. L'apertura del suo primo negozio su Brook Street a Londra nel 2000 e il riconoscimento del Royal Warrant nel 2013 da parte della Regina Elisabetta II hanno consolidato ulteriormente la sua posizione di prestigio nel settore.

Ancora oggi, John Smedley continua a innovare. Nel 2015 ha rilanciato la linea di abbigliamento femminile alla London Fashion Week e nel 2017 ha presentato la capsule unisex "Singular", un'innovazione nella maglieria britannica. La continuità familiare è un altro pilastro dell'azienda: Ian Maclean, rappresentante dell'ottava generazione, guida con orgoglio l'impresa che rimane fedele all'etichetta "Made in Great Britain".

Durante la nostra visita allo stabilimento di Matlock, siamo stati accolti con grande ospitalità e abbiamo avuto l'opportunità di esplorare ogni aspetto dell'azienda, dai reparti produttivi all’archivio storico. In quest’ultimo vengono conservati capi vintage e materiali storici, alcuni provenienti da collezionisti privati, con l'obiettivo di creare un museo dedicato alla storia del brand. Nei reparti produttivi, abbiamo osservato ogni fase del processo di lavorazione, dai macchinari per la smacchinatura alle delicate operazioni di rimaglio e rammendo, che l'azienda affida anche a partner specializzati per preservare l'artigianalità dei dettagli.

La dedizione alla qualità emerge anche nel reparto controllo qualità, dove ogni capo è esaminato attentamente per rispettare gli standard John Smedley, e nello showroom, dove le collezioni uomo e donna sono esposte in un ambiente che integra arte e tradizione. John Smedley continua così a distinguersi come esempio di eccellenza britannica, unendo tradizione e innovazione per creare capi di maglieria senza tempo.

The masterini are almost at the end of their wonderful master's course, but before starting the field project they took one last flight to England, to discover a famous knitting mill that still serves the British royal family.

John Smedley is a historic brand of the British textile industry, founded in 1784 during the Industrial Revolution in the factory at Lea Mills, Derbyshire, where it is still based today after more than 230 years. Beginning as a manufacturer of muslin and cotton yarns, the company rapidly evolved, launching the famous ‘Long Johns’ in 1825 with the introduction of one of the first knitting machines. Since then, John Smedley has built a global reputation for the quality and style of its products, exporting them worldwide since 1914.

Throughout the 20th century, the brand became an icon of British elegance, loved by celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and the Beatles, and collaborating with renowned designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith in the 1980s. The opening of his first shop on Brook Street in London in 2000 and the award of the Royal Warrant in 2013 by Queen Elizabeth II further consolidated his prestigious position in the industry.

Even today, John Smedley continues to innovate. In 2015, he relaunched the womenswear line at London Fashion Week and in 2017 he presented the unisex capsule ‘Singular’, an innovation in British knitwear. Family continuity is another pillar of the company: Ian Maclean, representing the eighth generation, proudly leads the business that remains true to the ‘Made in Great Britain’ label.

During our visit to the factory in Matlock, we were greeted with great hospitality and had the opportunity to explore every aspect of the company, from the production departments to the historical archive. The latter houses vintage garments and historical materials, some from private collectors, with the aim of creating a museum dedicated to the history of the brand. In the production departments, we observed every stage of the manufacturing process, from the knitting machinery to the delicate operations of linking and mending, which the company also entrusts to specialised partners to preserve the craftsmanship of the details.

The dedication to quality is also evident in the quality control department, where each garment is carefully examined to meet John Smedley standards, and in the showroom, where the men's and women's collections are displayed in an environment that integrates art and tradition. John Smedley thus continues to stand out as an example of British excellence, combining tradition and innovation to create timeless knitwear.
